Institute Staff & Instructors
Katy Santiago, M.S.
The Director
Restorative Exercise™ was created by Katy Santiago, a graduate biomechanist, who found that deep musculature strengthening, kinesthetic training, motor skill improvement, and flexibility exercises could significantly increase the quality of life for the following overlooked populations:

» Pre / Post natal women
» Seniors
» The Inflexible
» Non-Exercisers
» Individuals with Chronic Pain

"Returning the body to its intended movement patterns is a lifelong process. The most difficult part is relearning how to move, but the maintenance is easy. Once your body learns it, moving in this new way will be a constant source of enjoyment and self achievement. "
-Katy Santiago

Mary Bowman

Our newest addition, Mary, is in charge of institute operations. She also manages Katy's lecturing and media schedule. She is always ready to assist with a smile and has lots of energy!

Mary is also in the Restorative Exercise Specialist (RES) training program, and enjoys doing hours and hours of Restorative Exercise a week.

Ann Gallimore, CPT-RES

Annie's enthusiasm for movement has always led her to fitness and wellness activities. Before training in the RES program, Ann was a court reporter who battled sciatic pain for a number of years. Originally bringing her daughter Layne to the Institute for exercise therapy due to her broken back - she took a class and never left! In addition to teaching classes and private sessions, Ann enjoys a good game of tennis (watch out, she's TOUGH!) as well as hiking, painting, and goofing off!

Ann's specialties are working with clients with chronic back pain, teen girls, and recreative and competitive athletes.

Breena Maggio, CPT-RES

Breena has been in the fitness industry for over 10 years. She has served as a fitness program director, group exercise instructor, and personal fitness instructor. In addition to her Restorative Exercise™ (RE) training, Breena is also certified by the American College of Sports Medicine, and has a B.S. in Biological Sciences from UCSB.

"With 10 years in the fitness industry, and a history of mind/body education and philosophy, I was searching for the missing piece or missing connection.  There is so much misinformation, contradictory information, and misunderstanding.  With Restorative Exercise™, Katy has put all the disconnected pieces together.  I knew immediately that she had the answers I had been seeking.  In the process of learning RE, I have learned what incredible things my body can do and how much power I, and each one of us have/has to make life-transforming changes in our physical bodies, which in turn transforms our lives and also that it is never too late to make those changes."

Breena enjoys working will all students interested in learning! She has specialized in seniors for the last 8 years, and enjoys working with those new to exercise.

Breena is also a Pelvic Fitness™ Instructor.

Diane Rennell, Ph.D. CPT-RES

Diane has been an avid participant in athletic activities all her life - hiker, climber, cyclist, sailor, student of yoga.  Years after finishing her PhD and traveling to work around the world, she became interested in exercise pathways to improving physical performance and healing from injuries.  Originally coming to the Institute as a participant in a clinical research trial, Diane was impressed with the understanding imparted by the scientific, body-mechanical approach of Restorative Exercise.

Restorative Exercise is not just exercise it is education. It explains what doctors, therapists, coaches, and trainers fail to explain how to walk, sit, and move all the time, to maximize your body's balance of musculature, and minimize wear and tear.

As a naturalist at Channel Islands National Park, Diane is personally familiar with the challenges of vigorous walking and how to prevent injury or heal from too much of a good thing.  As a college educator, she knows first-hand the physical challenges presented by deskwork, computers, and too much sitting, and helps clients prevent and heal from injuries.  Diane also has training as a Pelvic Fitness Instructor a Restorative Exercise specialty area of particular importance to women and men as we grow older -  to maintain bone strength as well as healthy function of all the things our pelvises are good for!

With her experience teaching and communicating, Diane enjoys working with the full spectrum - from athletes to seniors, and senior athletes!  Diane especially enjoys working one-on-one in private sessions.

Roxanne VanPelt, CPT-RES

Roxanne had started a training program to be a fitness instructor years back when her life took a different direction. 18 years and two babies (twins!) later, Roxanne came to the Restorative Exercise Institute to deal with pelvic floor disorders arising after her cesarean. After such drastic changes in her body, Roxanne fufilled her dream of becoming an exercise instructor after completing the RES program.

In addition to a certification in PiYo (a hybrid format, which incorporates both basics of Pilates and Yoga), Roxanne has taken further training in the complex fascia system of the human body under John Barnes, PT, an innovator in the mysfascial release technique.

Roxanne specializes in women with pelvic floor disorders, but enjoys motivating everyone with her enthusiasm for the RE program.

Roxanne is also a Pelvic Fitness™ Instructor.
