Pregnant? Start Now!

We at the Restorative Exercise Institute are passionate about pregnancy for a two reasons.

Alignment and movement habits are passed visually from generation to generation. Many ailments that people develop later in life come from the movement patterns developed at the earliest motor-development stages. If we can teach you something before YOU become the teacher, it will save many issues, confusion, and expense for the next generation.

While birthing is an entirely natural process, your human body is no longer moving in a natural way, which does limit the mechanical and force generating properties of tissue needed to optimize the birthing process. Preparing your body either prior to or during your pregnancy can significantly improve your pelvic mechanics (increasing birthing space!), reduce pregnancy-related foot, knee, back, and pelvic pain for momma, and decrease the mechanical resistance to vaginal delivery — a win win for both mom and baby.

No matter where you choose to birth, at home, in the hospital, in a birthing center, or in your car (!), it is important to trust your natural process. We strive to help you trust, reduce your physical-body resistance, and decrease physical-body ignorance by teaching you, over the next 6 months, what is happening structurally and mechanically.

Most pregnancy and mom-to-be websites will tell you what to expect during pregnancy, like:

  • Swollen body parts
  • Painful hips and lower back
  • Sciatica
  • Achy and fee that increase in size
  • Difficult breathing
  • Varicose veins
  • Diastasis Recti (split in the abdominal muscle)
  • The waddle and the duck feet…

Do I need to go on?

The fact of the matter is, the list above is a result of your current, pre-pregnant mal-alignments being loaded and exaggerated by the steady increase of mass to your frame.

What if, instead of suffering through your pregnancy, you trained for:

  • An increase in pelvic and hip stabilizing muscle mass
  • An improved (bigger!) birthing space
  • Improved Uterine function
  • Improved core strength to prevent abdominal muscle split

SO, How does this program work?

First, You Rest.
We invite you to begin this program at the end of the first trimester. You can start incorporating a few pieces of information until then, but before the twelfth week, we (who have been through pregnancy ourselves) know that the first trimester is a time to allow your physiology to do what it needs to on a cellular level, without trying to change big things in ourselves. Plus, you may fall asleep at any time and we don’t want you to think that we are boring. It’s not us, we promise.

Once you sign up, we mail you two items in the mail:

Down There For Women, program creator Katy Bowman’s 5-exercise DVD that will give you the basics for opening up the main joints in the body required for optimal pelvic health — the feet, the knees, the sacrum, and the hips.  You will also receive a 1/2 dome, the Institute’s most FAVORITE piece of exercise equipment, ever. It will change your life, we promise.

THEN, for the next 20 weeks…

You will begin to receive a weekly email that includes some sort of exercise or alignment task, whether a video to follow or picture instructions. In addition, read the science behind WHY you are doing the movements you are doing and get helpful tips on how to align your every day life to help maintain (or learn) optimal alignment for life and birth!

At 32 weeks, we encourage you to rest again.

We encourage you to review your videos and articles, practicing what you can — what you have learned to this point — but want you to spend the last chunk of your pregnancy focusing on all of the other special tasks that come up.

But we’re not done with you yet!

At 46 weeks, we begin our four-week RECOVERY series.
Once a week, for four weeks you will get an email including all of the POST-NATAL info you’ve always wanted on alignment, like:

  • Baby carriers and strollers
  • Restoring your pelvis and pelvic floor
  • Toning the abdominals while living day-to-day
  • and Quick five-to-six minute, head-to-toe workouts that you can fit into your life, without needing to buy equipment or leave the house!
